`Omkara.` is a 2005 Indian Hindi drama film written and directed by Vishal Bhardwaj and produced by Mushir-Riaz. It stars Ajay Devgan, Kareena Kapoor, Shahid Kapoor, and Amrita Rao in pivotal roles. It was screened at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival as part of the non-competitive "Un Certain Regard" category. A number of Bollywood actors have cameo appearances in the film, including Saif Ali Khan, Irrfan Khan, Kirron Kher, Arjun Rampal and Om Puri. The story is set in a village in Uttar Pradesh. Omkara (Shahid Kapoor) is the adopted son of a powerful don named "Don" Thakur Das (Om Puri). Don Thakur has a younger biological son named "Balma" (Ajay Devgn). Don`s daughter is Huniya (Amrita Rao) who is in love with Omi (Kareena Kapoor), a woman from a neighboring village. Balma is played by Ajay Devgn. Balma`s father is the village sarpanch Thakur Ram (Saif Ali Khan). He is married to Champa (Arjumman) and they have a son named "Balwinder" (Shahid Kapoor). Balma`s mother is dead. Omkara is sent to college by his adoptive father Don Thakur Das and opened a computer repair shop with his friend Vicky Sharma (Boman Irani) in Delhi. One day, one of the students at the college he likes, Gita, comes with her parents and assures Omkara that if he has savings then he can give her salary and she will marry him and do what she wants. Omkara gives her the money only to find out that Gita was pregnant, but she denies to marry Omkara. When Omkara arrives in college the next day to see Gita, he discovers that she was not pregnant. She confesses to be in love with someone else and had lied about it. Omkara has a car accident and spends some time in hospital. He later returns to college only to find out that the student he likes, Preeti (Kareena Kapoor) is in love with him. Preeti confesses that she lied about being pregnant to see what Omkara would do. She is now in love with him and wants to marry him. Don Thakur Das`s don`s younger daughter Huniya falls in love with Omi. Balma shows hatred for Omi because during childhood his mother's friend schemed with Balma against Omi. Balma then confronts Omkara on the eve of his wedding with Preeti, who is now pregnant. He accuses Omkara of having an affair with Huniya, which he denies.
